Caring for Your Saree

A well-cared-for saree lasts generations. Here's how to keep your Silkend drapes looking their best.

Pure Silk & Kanjivaram Sarees

+
  • Never machine-wash. Always dry-clean pure silk sarees.
  • If stained, gently dab with cold water immediately — never rub.
  • Never hang in direct sunlight — UV fades both silk and zari.
  • Store flat, wrapped individually in soft muslin or cotton cloth.
  • Re-fold every 3–4 months to prevent permanent crease lines.
  • Add neem leaves or silica sachets to prevent moisture damage.

Banarasi & Zari-Heavy Sarees

+
  • Dry-clean only — water can tarnish metal zari.
  • Never keep bundled — zari threads can tangle and snap.
  • Wrap in acid-free tissue before storing in muslin.
  • Avoid spraying perfume directly — chemicals react with zari.
  • Store in a cool, dry cupboard with good ventilation.

Cotton & Silk-Cotton Sarees

+
  • First wash: Dry-clean recommended. Dark dyes may bleed.
  • From the second wash, gentle hand-wash in cold water with mild shampoo.
  • Do not wring — roll in a towel to remove excess water.
  • Dry flat in shade. Iron on low while slightly damp.
  • Store in a breathable cotton bag — never in plastic.

Organza & Tissue Sarees

+
  • Handle with care — organza and tissue are delicate fabrics.
  • Dry-clean only. Never wring, twist or soak.
  • Iron on the lowest setting with a pressing cloth in between.
  • Store flat with tissue paper between folds.
  • Avoid contact with rough jewellery edges — snags are difficult to repair.

General Storage Tips

+
  • Never store sarees in plastic — trapped moisture causes yellowing.
  • Air your collection every 2–3 months in shade.
  • Keep silica gel or camphor tablets (not in direct contact) in your wardrobe.
  • Separate coloured sarees to prevent dye transfer.
  • For heirloom pieces, consider professional preservation framing.
